Movies and Music. What Ever Happened to a Good Soundtrack?

Where have all the good movie soundtracks gone? Do you remember the Bodyguard, Saturday Night Fever, The Preacher's Wife, American Gangster and some others that may come to mind. These days good movie soundtracks are few and far between. They just don't make them like they use to at least in my opinion. A good soundtrack not only helps the movie flow better but also leaves a permanent impression in your mind. When was the last good soundtrack you heard? Was it Star Wars, was it the Matrix, or was it Lion King? What was so good about it? I would even go as far to say that a good soundtrack is like another character in the film. When properly done, the film and the music become intertwined and it becomes more than just a movie. It becomes an experience.

I could write pages on this one. I am a HUGE fan of great music in a movie. Of my top 5 favorite movies, 4 of them have amzaing soundtracks: Lion King, Moulin Rouge, Bodyguard, Rent. My iPod is filled with great music from movies. The last great soundtrack I heard was Dreamgirls. Kind of cheating cause it was also a musical. Before that I'd have to say the music from Wedding Date was perfect mix of great background music and great part of the storytelling. We need more great soundtracks.

Jay-Z American Gangster wasn't necessarily the official soundtrack of the movie, but it surely felt like it. I am a huge fan of great movie soundtracks. Not in any particular order. The Lion King with Elton John, Saturday Night Fever with the Bee Gees. I love film that have a great score to. For example the Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Indian Jones, Star Wars and The Middle Passage done by Amos Coulanges. I bleed treble and bass clefs.

Music is the soundtrack to life... I firmly believe that. So adding the right music or sounds to a movie just makes the movie more believable. It draws me in... the music can excite me or make me cry (not that I cry during movies)... I recently saw Hancock, I felt the music was weird... what do you think?
